The Blue Satin Dress or El Vestido de Raso Azul

The rich texture and color of my dress was exactly as this

Ingres painted the Princess of Broglie with a blue satin dress the same shade of mine! But a different style of course
My dress was A Line, short, sleeveless, similar to this but much prettier

Mannequin satin high heels satin shoes were very popular in the 50's

El Vestido de Raso Azul

Living in communist Cuba at age 14 -and wondering how our lives would turn out in that sad & cruel regime- my mother found a beautiful piece of blue satin -exactly this color!- and had the neighborhood dressmaker whip me up a short evening dress.

So young -yet so sophisticated. And it was gorgeous!

Miraculously she found a pair of American “Mannequin” (made in Italy) white satin heels & had them dyed the exact hue! (The old store owner even wrapped them in blue tissue paper I remember!) and The Blue Satin dress just hung there, ready to be used one day. I did rehearsed wearing it at home twirling around our living room, once in a while and feeling beautiful -wondering when the invitation would come, or the occasion to wear it!

When we finally were allowed to leave for exile 5 years had passed -and we were only permitted by the Government to take out of the country a suitcase with 3 dresses, 1 coat, 2 pairs of shoes and 1 nightgown. So I tried to “pass” my blue satin dress as a nightgown! We even took out the zipper of the “princess style” dress and put little bows to tie it! The Mannequin shoes were too extravagant (my mother said) when we were only allowed only 2 pairs (we would need more practical shoes) -and had to stay in my soon-to-be-confiscated (and full of all our possessions) apartment -inside of its blue tissued box. (I have always wondered what happened to them!)

But at least I was taking to Mexico my beautiful dress, which had become my symbol of hope for a new & happy life.  I was 19 and so many dreams to fulfill!

But at Havana Airport the woman officer who checked our bags & counted one by one “the permitted items” was no fool. And she immediately got very upset & “confiscated” my dress. “No soy idiota compañerita” -she spewed. Terrified of being denied our departure (as it was a common thing) my mother told her to please keep it, since my daughter “made a mistake”. And my Vestido de Raso Azul stayed behind.

And now I found this photo of the exact same material & color -and it felt just right to share with you this little story. This picture has brought back to my memory a zillion feelings. Both sad & happy! And the phrase “recuerda El Vestido de Raso Azul” would become part of our vocabulary between mami & I,  as a symbol of so many things. Mainly hope!

Brunch in Paris? Grand Luxe for 95 euros per person at these 2 restaurants

Parisians have now firmly embraced “le brunch,” making it a regular part of their Sunday routine and giving us plenty of new brunch spots across the city. However, the Parisian love for eggs Benedict also brings a downside – the long queues outside the city’s more “hipster” establishments as you wait for your name to be called out from a clipboard – possibly over an hour after you arrived.
For those who simply refuse to wait so long, there are a few places that allow you to book in advance, ensuring a table immediately. And these 2 luxurious places are just wonderful!

Café de la Paix, 9th arrondissement, Website: www.cafedelapaix.fr
Already worth a visit for literary fans thanks to being a former haunt of Oscar Wilde, Café de la Paix is also one of the most extravagant brunches on our list, if not in the city. Be sure to head over hungry as this brunch feast includes a selection of seafood, charcuterie, Asian-inspired stir fried vegetables, sushi and makis, followed by a whole dessert table brimming with profiteroles, éclairs, Paris-Brest pastries, and the iconic Café de la Paix millefeuille.  It doesn’t come cheap, but the gourmet menu and rich history of the café make it one for pushing the (brunch) boat out, and there is also a special brunch for “les enfants” making it a great choice for families.  94€ per person.
Those looking for luxury for their Sunday brunch can now head to Le Meurice, which just launched a new Sunday Brunch at Restaurant Le Dalí.   Brunch begins with a glass of fresh fruit or vegetable juice in the hope of undoing the damage caused by the restaurant’s melt-in-the-mouth pastries, although for those who can resist the temptation there’s also a selection of seasonal fruit salads. Chef Jocelyn Herland has also created a selection of gourmet hot brunch dishes, from free-range chicken fricassee to sautéed Lobster with crispy wheat, whilst famed pastry chef Cédric Grolet helps satisfy sweet tooths with a selection of indulgent desserts.  Sister hotel Plaza Athénée also has a beautiful courtyard and outdoor terrace for those looking for a luxury alfresco option during summer. €95 per person.

Bonjour Tristesse...Once again!

Bonjour Tristesse - my favorite novel when I was a teenager was re/launched last year!

Francoise Sagan's book gave me "permission" to be irreverent.  It was amazing!

Her sexy novel -and the movie with Jean Seberg  -is a treasure that millennials should enjoy. Dont miss on it! Many years later I interviewed Sagan in Paris -and it was one of the best ever moments!

Stylish & way ahead of her time, Jean Seberg -was found dead in her car in Paris -of an apparent suicide- at age 40 in 1979. Very much in the style of an Audrey Hepburn but with a very tormented life. See her in Breathless with Jean Paul Belmondo & in Bonjour Tristesse

Comme des Garcons - Rei Kawakubo.- Press Preview

Great press preview (Caroline Kennedy was the speaker and she looks great) for opening of the Costume Institute homage to Japanese creator Rei Kawakubo, founder of Comme des Garcons.

The exhibition cannot be well described. It is more of an art exhibit than a clothes exhibit. Quite stunning! These surreal designs are not meant to be worn -but to stimulate the imagination & inspire concepts, shapes, volumes & textures. And I walked fascinated & "boquiabierta" for 2 hours as I saw the show. A feast for the eyes.

Maravilloso Max Mara Otoño-Invierno 2017

Good bye to the iconic Waldorf Astoria Hotel

The iconic Waldorf Astoria hotel in closing for 3 years as it is renovated into a Chinese-owned condominium.  New York is changing so much!

I have attended at the Waldorf so many Vanidades events -and met scores of celebrities. Last time I was there it was 3 years ago at the Spanish Institute Gala in Nov 2013, where Oscar de la Renta (still healthy!) introduced me to honoree Hillary Clinton, who was wearing one of his designs in dark navy blue -which zipper broke and I know this because I found her and her assistant Uma Abedin sewing it at the bathroom!! ...Also there "old friends" -always so friendly Queen Sofia of Spain and Antonio Banderas, with a very unpleasant and dour faced Melanie Griffith.

Many anedoctes and photos here:

Disco platforms? Yes, they are back!

Not for everyone. but they are definitely back! Nostalgia or a lack of fresher ideas? Whatever the reason, the "disco-platform" shoes are all over -and the most famous brands are making them.

NARCISO RODRIGUEZ GREAT FALL 2017 COLLECTION

My goodfriend Cuban-American Narciso Rodriguez!

Such a true creator. No gimmicks. No crazyness. The purity of his clothes is always stunning. Amazing cuts, understated sexyness, high voltage chic -and a beautiful fluidity -they all spell Narciso! So many black and black & white
clothes!

VICTORIA BECKHAM FALL 2017...A DETAIL

Victoria Beckham collection-Two colors one would think they don't go together...but it is a beautiful clash of shades!!

Yves Saint Laurent fue quien inició estas mezclas audaces y muy diferentes de colores, rompiendo con las normas. Por eso su influencia en la moda fue extraordinaria, ya que cambió mil conceptos.

Me fascinaba. Lo entrevisté una vez por casi 2 horas y era súper tímido y muy dulce. Y tenía cara de genio-loco -con unos ojos de una inteligencia profunda.

DEL POZO FALL 2017... PURE GLAMOUR...

My favorite at DELPOZO. If I were a star, this would be my red-carpet Oscar's entrance maker!

Ralph Lauren Fall 2017

Uber luxurious setting, at the Ralph Lauren Madison Avenue mansion-store, for his Fall 2017 collection. Models up & down carpeted stairs, divine white sofas & chairs, orchids & lush flowers and elegant champagne butlers...

And a 'desert' inspired rich collection in beiges, shades of sand, browns, lots of golds, animal print accessories, shimmery textiles, some sexy black looks and a group of satin jeweled colored gowns at the end. It was described as a "desert oasis" and it sure felt like it.

And the clothes? Mostly very wearable pieces --and many styles we have seen before, but are always lovely to own. They produce a sense of being well dressed & "secure" of one's image.
